Peace Study Tour 2025 Hiroshima Orizuru Fellow: FIDIKOM UIN Syarif Students Explore SDGs through Field Trip to Etajima
As part of the Peace Study Tour 2025 Hiroshima Orizuru Fellow, two students from the Faculty of Da‘wah and Communication Studies (FIDIKOM), UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta — Rahmi Nur Azizah (Master’s in Da‘wah Management) and Siti Nurlailah Syadiah (Master’s in Islamic Communication and Broadcasting) — took part in a field trip on August 7, 2025, to Etajima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan.
This field trip was one of the key experiential learning components of the program, which emphasizes peace, sustainability, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Participants were divided into three groups, and the FIDIKOM delegates had the opportunity to visit the Olive Lab and an Oyster Farm. There, they conducted water quality testing and interviewed local practitioners about their business models that contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The speakers emphasized that while their initiatives may appear small in scale, sustainable efforts must be carried out consistently.
The journey continued with a visit to the Satoumi Science Museum, where participants learned about the concept of marine ecosystems and the importance of sustainable coastal resource management. This experience enriched their understanding, particularly for students from non-marine academic backgrounds.
According to Rahmi Nur Azizah, the visit highlighted that even though their fields of study are not directly related to marine science, their goals remain aligned — namely, contributing to the realization of the SDGs through social, educational, and managerial approaches.
This program is a collaboration between Hiroshima University, Columbia University, and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), consistently promoting cross-national and interdisciplinary cooperation in pursuit of global peace and sustainability.
