International Adjunct Professor Discusses Social Movements and the Development of National Development Research

Jakarta- International Adjunct Professor at UIN Jakarta- Prof. Ian Buchanan from the University of Wollongong, Australia attended the international seminar and conference of the Faculty of Da'wah and Communication Sciences (FDIKOM) UIN Jakarta. In the second session of the conference held at the Kristal Hotel on Wednesday (30/10), Prof. Ian gave material on Contemporary Social Movement In Indonesia: Humanities And Cultural Perspectives .

On that occasion, Prof. Ian explained that a social movement does not aim to direct the public to agree with the actions taken during the social movement. More clearly, Prof. Ian explained that social movements sometimes occur because someone likes and dislikes a phenomenon or existing policy.

“Social movements are not what makes people agree, but more ideological. "Sometimes it's more about what people dislike or hate: same enemy," explained the Professor of the scientific disciplines of humanities, cultural studies and human geography .

Furthermore, according to Prof. Ian, social movements on social media are explained by Prof. Ian that the media pays great attention to how to collect various data from large-scale platforms. "Media is concerned how to collect data from platforms on a large scale," he explained. .

In addition to Prof. Ian, also present at the conference, Prof. Dr. Elsa Clave from the University of Hamburg, Germany delivered material on Contemporary Social Movement In Indonesia: Media And Social Development Perspectives. According to Prof. Elsa, the rapid development and dissemination of information in this era also has an impact on the academic field, that the demand for publishing research articles is also greater and must be fast. This causes many research articles to be unpublishable due to inappropriate data and quality. Therefore, at this time the challenge for researchers is to produce research articles that are fast but remain critical.

"The initial steps to produce good and interesting research are to know what to research, what to look for, and why to do the research. These questions will eventually give rise to a common thread that will produce interesting research. what is sought by asking yourself what is the motivation. Why am I researching it will get a common thread that will become interesting research." explained Prof. Elsa.

Meanwhile, related to social movement research, Prof. Elsa explained that the basis of the concept of social movement comes from the field of sociology. The understanding agreed upon in this discussion is that social movement is a form of struggle movement and is different from collective movements. Therefore, in the scope of social media, social movements have had a lot of influence on life and social order related to political, economic and other policies.

It is known that the international seminar and conference entitled Contemporary Social Movement In Indonesia: Media And Social Development Perspectives was organized by the Faculty of Da'wah and Communication Sciences (FDIKOM) seminar of the State Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. This event took place on October 30 to November 1, 2024 at the Kristal Hotel, South Jakarta.

This seminar aims to explore the dynamics of contemporary social movements in Indonesia from the perspective of media and social development. By presenting experts, academics, and practitioners from various countries, this seminar is expected to be a forum for constructive and innovative discussions in understanding the role of media in the development of social movements in Indonesia.

Through this international seminar and conference, experts and scientists, namely lecturers at the Faculty of Da'wah and Communication Sciences, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, discussed the problems of contemporary social movements in Indonesia in the context of the development of mass media and social development.
