FDIKOM UIN Jakarta International Seminar and Conference Highlights Contemporary Social Movements in Indonesia from the Perspective of Media and Social Development
JAKARTA– The Faculty of Da'wah and Communication Sciences (FDIKOM) of the State Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held an International Seminar and Conference entitled Contemporary Social Movement In Indonesia: Media And Social Development Perspectives. This event took place on October 30 to November 1, 2024 at the Kristal Hotel, South Jakarta.
This seminar aims to explore the dynamics of contemporary social movements in Indonesia from the perspective of media and social development. By presenting experts, academics, and practitioners from various countries, this seminar is expected to be a forum for constructive and innovative discussions in understanding the role of media in the development of social movements in Indonesia.
Through this international seminar and conference, experts and scientists, namely lecturers at the Faculty of Da'wah and Communication Sciences, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, discuss the problems of contemporary social movements in Indonesia in the context of the development of mass media and social development. It is intended that this activity will bring the benefits of academic dialectics, recommendations on problems in Indonesia and recognition of the thoughts of lecturers at the Faculty of Da'wah and Communication Sciences through written articles published in internationally reputable journals.
Dean of FDIKOM UIN Jakarta, Dr. Gun Gun Heryanto explained that the theme of the international seminar and conference was intended to explore how communication media, digital, social and traditional media in terms of their contribution to social development influence the understanding of social movements.
“The theme of this conference is both timely and critical. In recent years, we have witnessed an upsurge of social movements in Indonesia that not only challenge the status quo but also bring forth new dialogues on social justice, human rights, environmental sustainability, and equality. These movements are not isolated; they are supported and strengthened by the reach and influence of modern media. "It is in this context that we explore how media—whether digital, social, or traditional—contributes to social development and impacts our understanding of these movements ," explained the Dean.
In line with the Dean, the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of FDKIOM, Dr. Fita Fathurokhmah M.Si. said the main objective of this international seminar and conference is to observe the role of social movements in shaping society, strengthening public voices and encouraging social change.
"This gathering offers us an opportunity to reflect on the powerful role of social movements in shaping society, amplifying voices, and driving social change ," explained Dr. Fitta.
Meanwhile, the event which lasted for three days presented several speakers with various expertise in the field of media, including; in Session I Prof. Dr. Elsa Clave from the University of Hamburg, Germany delivered material on Contemporary Social Movement In Indonesia: Media And Social Development Perspectives. In session II, the material was delivered by Prof. Ian Buchanan from the University of Wollongong, Australia who explained about Contemporary Social Movement In Indonesia: Humanities And Cultural Perspectives.
Meanwhile, in session 3 there is a Cultural Night and Session IV contains Paper Panel Call for Papers:
Panel presentation of papers with the agenda of coaching clinic of internationally reputable scientific journal articles with speakers: Editor in Chief of Jurnal Komunikasi, Indonesian Communication Scholars Association and Head of Doctoral Program in Communication Science, Gunadarma University, Prof. Dr. Rajab Ritonga, MS. Furthermore, Sub Theme: Productively Writing in Reputable International Journals will be delivered by Professor of the Faculty of Communication Science, Padjajaran University, Bandung-Prof. Dr. Atwar Bajari, M.Sc. Finally, the event was closed with a reviewers session by the Head of Doctoral Program in Social Welfare Science, University of Indonesia, Dr. Johanna Debora Imelda, MA.
From this international seminar and conference activity, it is expected to strengthen the academic dialectic at FDIKOM UIN Jakarta regarding the development of contemporary social movements in Indonesia from a media and social development perspective, as well as make academic recommendations on social movements that focus on influencing or are focused on groups or communities related to changes in the direction of just and inclusive social development.
