Delegation from the Faculty of Da‘wah and Communication Studies, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Joins the Hiroshima Orizuru Fellow Peace Study Tour 2025
Hiroshima, August 2, 2025 — The Hiroshima Orizuru Fellow Peace Study Tour 2025 officially commenced on Friday (2/8) at Hiroshima University, Japan. This international program brought together students from 26 countries to deepen their knowledge, expand academic networks, and foster cross-disciplinary collaboration on global peace and sustainable development.
The Faculty of Da‘wah and Communication Studies (FIDIKOM), UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, sent two delegates: Rahmi Nur Azizah (Master’s in Da‘wah Management) and Siti Nurlailah Syadiah (Master’s in Islamic Communication and Broadcasting). Their participation reflects the university’s commitment to taking an active role in global academic forums that address strategic issues of peace and conflict resolution.
The opening ceremony was led by Dr. Joshua Fisher from Columbia University, a distinguished scholar in environmental peacebuilding. In his remarks, Dr. Fisher emphasized that addressing global challenges requires collaboration across disciplines and cultures. He urged all participants to take part in collective efforts to build peace, reduce conflict, and develop sustainable programs.
Throughout the eight-day program (August 2–10, 2025), participants engaged in a series of activities including public lectures, workshops, and field trips. A notable highlight was the field trip to Etajima, which offered valuable insights into sustainable marine resource management. Participants also attended the 80th anniversary commemoration of the Hiroshima atomic bombing on August 6, joined by communities, leaders, and representatives from around the world.
In addition, the participants had the rare opportunity to engage in direct dialogue with hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors). The testimonies shared provided a profound reminder of the humanitarian consequences of armed conflict and the importance of collective efforts to safeguard peace.
This program was jointly organized by Hiroshima University, Columbia University, and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF). Through such participation, the initiative is expected to strengthen academic contributions toward sustainable peace, while also reinforcing institutional ties between UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta and its international partners.
The program officially concluded on August 10, 2025, with the shared hope that the collaboration built during the fellowship will continue through research, knowledge exchange, and joint initiatives in the future.
